The wife of Józef Mehoffer appears as an elegantly coiffed and hatted lady in both The Strange
Garden (1903, National Museum in Warsaw, fig. 18) and Portrait of the Artist's Wife (1907,
National Museum in Warsaw, fig. 19). The propriety and constraint of dark, high-necked
dresses and elaborately disciplined but abundant hair as seen in these paintings offers a clear
view of the dichotomy of women’s nature as perceived by men in this period. There seems to 9
