A different approach to the Devil's figurę in the Temptation scenę was worked out in the 9th
century (Fig. 6). It was repeated twice on an ivory book cover (Fig. 7)33 where the Satan is repre-
sented as a beautiful tempter in human shape, dressed and wingless. This early representational
formuła may be viewed as a foremnner of the Temptation scenę in the Jerusalem Triptych of
Gdańsk, original in its ideological content. Christ, standing frontally, is depicted looking at the
Satan and raising his hand in an orator's gesture; his purple robe symbolizes humility, mention
of which is made in a Passion treatise originating in the circle of Bernard of Clairvaux: ,Nimi-
rum Christus crucifixus violaest. In cruce enim humillimus factus est. In hac humilitate solum colo-
rem intuentibus Judaeis et gentibus ipse cołor vilis apparuit; nobis vero qui virtutem agnoscimus
passionis, ipsa etiam humilitas despecta humilitas Christi placet, et per humilitatem maxime com-
