mendatur'.si The Satan has beastly claws that show from beneath his robe. In the Middle Ages,
he took on the shape of a he-goat, in accordance with Isaiah's vision of the destruction of Baby-
Ion (XIII, 1—22).36

In popular beliefs, ghosts — evil spirits live in ruins and deserted areas. They are represented
as shaggy goats or half-people and half-goats. This is what the Satan looks like in the 16th ccn-
tury Biblia Pauperum36 and in the xylographic series the Geistliche Asslegung des Lebcns Ihesu
