1. „The Art of Photography", view of the exhibition (Piotr Mądrach's design)

These are the first Polish photographs known from press mentions.4 The same Strasz was the
author of the first handbook of photography published in the Polish language, which appeared
in 1856. Earlier Polish readers had the opportunity to acąuaint themselves with Daguerre's
original brochure describing his discovery, and its two translations published in 1839 and 1840.
The first exhibition of daguerreotypes in Warsaw was held by the local Charity Society between
13 October and 4 November 1839 and, apart from daguerreotypes brought from Paris, featured
two made in Warsaw by the mathematician, Professor Jędrzej Radwański. The first Polish
photographic studio was established in Mińsk Litovsk by Antoni Prószyński several months after
Daguerre's invention5 had been announced, and the second studio was formed in Warsaw in 1841
by Józef Giwartowski. Thus Poles immediately assimilated this new art form, while publications
on new methods and technical improvements provided an impetus towards its constant deve-
lopment and perfection. Poles were also responsible for many discoveries and inventions in this
field, however, under the political conditions of a country dividcd among the partitioning powers
these achievements were usually accredited to other states or passed over in silence altogether.0
