chanowiecki of London, the then Vice-Minlster of Culture and Art presently Dircctor of the
Royal Castle in Warsaw Andrzej Rottermund, and last but not least, professor Stanisław Sołty-
siński, an eminent expert in international law.

The Raczyński Foundation at the National Museum in Poznań started activities on August
23, 1991, with a meeting of the board in the presence of the Founder, Count Edward Raczyński
at his London apartment. Making up the Foundation's substance are paintings and other Works
of art from the Rogalin palące as well as the palące itself and park at Rogalin. In conseąuence
the remarkable Rogalin Gallery created by the Founder's father, Edward Raczyński, also forms
part of the Foundation's property. The Gallery consisted of 318 paintings, including an unmat-
ched collection of works by Jacek Malczewski, 11 statues and 14 objects of decoratiy e art. The
Foundation, which is perpetual, concentrates upon maintaining the works of art given to the
Foundation by the Founder and rendering them accessible to the public. The National Museum
in Poznań is charged with the administrative functions of the Foundation and the Dircctor
of the Museum is also President of the Board of the Foundation. The Founder's family will
have an apartment in the Rogalin Palące at their disposal.

President Edward Raczyński's admirablc generosity has created proper conditions for the
Rogalin palące and the art collections gathered there to remain accessible to the public without
infringment of the owner's rights. The Poznań Foundation and the generous gift to the National
Museum in Warsaw are one more case of the exemplary patronage of the arts exercised by the
Raczyński family over generations; one needs only to mention two facts from the nineteenth
century — the establishing of the Raczyński Library in Poznań and the founding of the Gallery
of Atanazy Raczyński. Generation after generation, members of this distinguished family have
continued to consider themeselves depositaries of the national cultural heritage, collecting and
maintaing works of art to the profit and advantage of Country and Nation.
