ANTHONIE PALAMEDESZ (Delft 1601 — 1673 Amsterdam)

Possibly a pupil of Micliiel J. Miereveld in Delft and Dirck Hals in Haarlcm, he was admitted
into the guild of St. Lukę in Delft in 1621. He was a portraitist and a painter of scenes from
soldiery life.

. Guardroom

Oil on panel; 54.3x69.6 cm; inv. no. 181838 (M. Ob. 2371).
Signed: A. Palamedes 1650 (lower right corner).

Prov.: In the collection of Edward Raczyński and his family in Warsaw. Deposited at the
National Museum in Warsaw in 1941; donated to tbe museum in 1991.
A late work of this artist, the painting displays a colouring that is more vivid than in his
earlier works, typization of the faces and a crowding of figures. Tbere may be more to this
apparently simple scenę than meets the eye, the artist intcnding pcrhaps to exprcss a deeper
moralistic idea. Of the soldiers shown in the painting, all but one are oceupied with mun-
dane tasks and enjoying simple pleasures; smoking a pipc, playing dice, catching lice in
their clothes, chatting among themselves or — as in the case of the officer — with a woman,
presumably a housekeeper. One of the soldiers is depicted blowing his trumpet to raise the
alarm, in direct contrast to the lack of alertness on the part of the others (see E. Snoep-
Reitsma, "De Waterzuchtige Vrouw van Gerard Dou en de betekenis van de lampetkan",
in: Album Amicorum J.G. van Gelder, The Hague, 1973, p. 289).
