Dutch painter, second half of the 17th century
9. Breakfast "pronW still life

Oil on canvas: 79x89,5 m; Inv. no.: 181852 (M. Ob. 2372).

Prov.: In the collection of Edward Raczyński and his family in Warsaw. Deposited at the
National Museum in Warsaw in 1941; donated to the museum in 1991.
On the back of the painting and old monogram in black G I ligated, inscription 118/Heda
(probably an old number in the collection and an old attribution) and R.R 98.
M. Walicki attributcd the painting to Jan Albertsz Rootius (1624—1666), referring to a
painting in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (no. C 611) as an analogy (Warszawa, 1939,
no. 113). There is, however, some doubt about it. The use of light, the arrangement of the
space and the bru.sh.work differ a great deal. One cannot also disregard entirely an inscription
in red and black paint on the paper horn on the plate near the right edge: ligated mono-
gram G I (in red) — the same as on the back of the canvas, but turned sidcways; DANIEL
(in red), SCHYL (in black), MANS (in red). Althoug with the exception of the right side,
the other three sides of the painting have becn cut down, it was not overpainted or over-
restored. The name, unknown in dictionaries, may belong to some unknown artist. During
his recent visit to Warsaw, I. Bergstrom suggested the probability of this still life being
painted in the sixties of the 17th century. Conservation and further research are neces-
sary.

Exh.: Warsaw, 1939.
