3. Carl Adolph Heiming, Portrait of Atanazy, Edward, Roger and Karol Raczyński in the Raczyński
Palące in Berlin, 1839, Poznań, Muzeum Narodowe

(Lorenzo Monaco, Botticelli, Bronzino, Sermoneta, Bassano, Strozzi and others), the Nether-
landish school (Massys, Snyders) and the Spanish school (Antolinez, Zurbaran, Carreno, Velaz-
quez), we also find a sizcable number of paintings by artists living in the first half of the nine-
teenth century, mainly German (Overbeck, Steinie, Wach, Fiihrich, Wilhelm Schadow, Cor-
nelius, Lessing, Kaulbach and others); these were often simply comissioned straight from the
artist's studios.

Atanazy initially kept his collections in the castle of Zawada near Dębica, and intended
to house them in Poznań, in a special building near the library founded by his brother Edward.
In the long run, however, the collection ended up in Berlin, where Atanazy settled for good
in 1826 and built a magnificent palace-cum-gallery (Fig. 3). In 1903 the Raczyński collections
were transferred to Poznań and today they are to be seen (preserved almost intact) in the
National Museum there.15
