But, alas ! how vain are all our reason-
ings ! In the very midst of these medi-
tations, my philosophy was at once overset,
and in a moment I found mylelf relapsed
into a poor miserable mortal; was obliged
to own, that pain was the greatest of evils;
and would have given the world to have
been once more arrived at those humble
habitationSs which, but a moment before,
I had looked down upon with such con-
tempt.—In running over the ice, my leg-
folded under me, and I received so violent
a sprain, that in a few minutes it swelled
to a great degree, and I found myself un-
able to put my foot to the ground. Every
muscle and fibre was at that time chilled
and froze by the extreme cold, the ther-
mometer continuing slill below the point
of congelation. It was this circumstance,
I suppose, that made the pain so violent ;
