ALABASTER VASES. VESSELS, ETC

1789. Painted wooden coffin belonging to the
Grseco-Roman period, length 6 ft. 2 in. On the
outside are painted figures of the four genii of the
dead, or children of Horus, and other deities, and
the ordinary sepulchral formula; which, however, are
sometimes incomplete. On the breast is a figure of
the goddess Nut, and at the foot are figures of
various amulets, the tet, etc. The inside of the
coffin is very rough, and is without paintings and in-
scriptions. The coffin is made of rough pieces of
wood pegged together, and lacks the finish and good
work of the best periods of Egyptian sepulture.
Inside the coffin is the mummy of a woman which is
remarkable for its elaborate bandages, which are very
narrow and are closely folded in a diamond pattern ;
these suggest that the mummy belongs to the late
Roman period, and also that the coffin was not made
for it. Presented by Sir Francis H. Taking, 1896.
