Before we enter upon an account of the.
buildings and sculptured ornaments of Athens,
it may not be uninteresting to take a short
biographical sketch of those eminent indivi-
duals who contributed, still more than her
splendid porticoes and temples, to adorn this
favoured seat of literature and science.

We have hitherto spoken of little but poli-
tical history and civil government, of the
kings, magistrates, legislators and generals;
but to understand and estimate duly the
