New Subscription Price

To Our Subscribers:
It is now a year since we first addressed to the public in
response to its demand for a high-class photographic publication, an
appeal for its aid in the establishment of Camera Work. Such
promises as were then made, we hope it will be agreed, have been
more than fulfilled.
No expense was stinted, with the result that the costs of
publishing have so far exceeded our original estimate that we
find ourselves confronted by the necessity of increasing the price of
future subscriptions to five dollars per year.
Although we had planned in the beginning to furnish our
subscribers with a magazine more sumptuous than any which had
ever been attempted in photography, we found ourselves impelled
by the exigencies of the pictorial situation to exceed our original
intentions. In addition we were confronted by post-office regula-
tions which materially increased the cost of mailing and by a tariff
which greatly increased the cost of such illustrations as we were
compelled to secure from abroad.
In view of these circumstances, the necessity of making the
publication self-supporting and a determination to keep it up to
the standard already set, we feel that our friends will under-
stand the situation. During the past year the price of subscription
was not sufficient to cover the cost of the book (nor will it be
during the ensuing year) and part of the deficiency was made good
by advertisements, and above all by the premiums paid for single
back numbers; the Numbers I, II, III, and IV now selling for
eighteen dollars. The work to which we are devoting ourselves and
