HENRY VIII. AND HIS WIVES
1530-1547
Hampton Court, of which King Henry took pos-
session immediately after Wolsey’s disgrace, now
became this monarch’s favourite palace. The place,
with its spacious halls and extensive grounds,
exactly suited his taste and habits. Here, in the
Milanese ambassador’s words, he “ resided willingly,”
indulging in the sports and royal exercise in which
he excelled, and giving free rein to his passion for
Anne Boleyn. A suite of rooms was furnished for
her use, rich satin and velvet gowns, jewels, and
furs were lavished upon her by the King, who rode
and walked with her daily, taught her to play bowls
and shoot with bow and arrows, and spent most of
the evenings in her company.
Hawking and hunting, archery and fishing, tilting
and tennis, were among the sports in which the
King took especial delight. Our Venetian friend
Giustiniani was lost in admiration at his Majesty’s
prowess both in the hunting field and tilting ring.
When he first saw Henry clad from head to foot
in cap, doublet, hose, and shoes of rich green velvet,
mounted on the Marquis of Mantua’s fine bay, and
watched him making the horse jump and curvet,
