Plate XCIX,
671. Calcareous stone. Height, 4 feet 6\ inches. From the necropolis of Golgoi.
Sepulchral stele, having volutes of an Ionic capital, above which, in low relief,
are large tendrils, curling inward, and two winged sphinxes, resting on a symbolized
tree. The abacus above is divided in three horizontal bands, in the form of an archi-
trave. In taking the stele out of the tomb it was broken at the base, and reset.
Traces of red color on the sphinxes, tree, and lotus flowers. The flat treatment of the
sphinxes and floral ornament indicates a refined stage of archaic art.
