PLATE LI. CONTINUED.

Upper portion of bearded figure ; apparently playing an instrument like a bagpipe, which
he holds to the mouth with both hands. Pilleus on the head, over which is thrown a chlamys,
which falls upon the shoulders. Abdomen naked and protuberant. Probably a Silenus. Rather
rude Greek style.

404. Red terra cotta. Height, 2% inches.

Upper portion of beardless male figure, of good Grasco-Roman style ; clad in tunic, with
belt across from left shoulder beneath the right arm, supporting two amulets. Both arms
broken away.

405. Red terra cotta. Height, 2^ inches.

Fragment. Head and bust of female, of good Greek style ; over the head a peplos falling
in folds at each side of the neck, and behind the back. Simple throat-necklace of beads or pearls.
Clad in chiton, with himation over the left shoulder and arm. Apparently seated in a chair; but
too much is broken away to allow of certainty. Right arm, and a large portion near the left eye,
broken away.

406. Red terra cotta. Height, yA inches.

Fragment of female figure, in the style of personifications of a goddess, with the cista in
the left hand. Much defaced ; but apparently wearing the calathus and peplos of Demeter ;
necklace ; close-fitting chiton revealing the form as far as below the waist; himation, surrounding
the lower part of the body in sinus-like folds.

407. Red terra cotta, exterior partly encrusted with gray. Height, 2~% inches.

Youthful head, of good Greek style ; head-dress somewhat like a Phrygian cap, with wing-
like appendages at the sides, reminding one of Mercury's petasus. Curls visible at its edges.
Too much worn and broken for detailed description.

408. Red terra cotta. Height, 3 inches.

Fragmentary head of female figure carrying a water jar. Hair in twisted rolls about
the forehead ; remnants of a hand holding the jar on the right side ; ear-rings. Much worn
and broken.
