and literature. But to the teacher’s great
amazement the boy knew everything.
In the Lalita Vistara, Gautama is made
to show his learning and skill in two ways :
Firstly when he competes for the hand of
Yasudhara : and secondly when he ‘exhibits
his familiarity with all lore, sacred and profane,
astronomy, the syllogisms, medecine and mystic
rites.’
