Charpentier, Uttaradhyayanasutram

belonging to the Pali-canon — parallels that 1 have collected in
an article in the WZKM. XXIV, 63 ff.

2. gamanugamam rlycmte is not uncommon in Jain scrip-
tures, alternating with gamanugamam duijjamane (Ayar. Aup. S.
KS. &c.).

5. It is very difficult to find out the correct reading of the
last two words. I have written bhikkha-m-atthd uvatthie, which is
the reading of A and B2, and really seems to be that of S. But
the latter mentions a pdthdntara, viz. bhikkhass’ atthd uvatthie,
and B1 has bhikkhass’ atthd-m-uvatthie, which seems also to be a
good reading.

7. Jannatthd ya je diyd is certainly more correct than j. y.
jiindiyd, although it does not quite suit the metre.

16. Cp. Mahavagga VI, 35, 8 = SN. 568—569 (cp. Franke
WZKM. XXIV, 245 sq.); Mahavastu III, 246, 7 ff. The words
jannatthi veyasd muham (cp. SBE. XLX, p. 138 n. 1) are not very
clear; however, D. tries to explain them in the following way:
veddndm hi dadhna iva navanitam dranyakam pradhdnam | tatra cci \

satyam tap ah susamtosah ksamd cdritfam arjavam |

sraddhd dhrtir ahimsd ca samvaras ca tathdparah ||

iti dasaprakdra eva dharma uktas tadanusdri voktarupam agni-
hotram iti \ tathd yajnah prastavdd bhdvayajuah samyamarupas
tadartlii vedasdm ydgdndm mukham updyds te hi saty eva yajndr-
thini pravartante || I do not know that vedas- ever means yaga-
’sacrifice’ straightout, and I should rather suppose that these
words contain a very old corruption which it will scarcely be poss-
ible to amend.

17. Cp. SN. 598 (Franke ZDMG. 64, 15). S. mentions a
varia lectio:

jahd cande galibie citthanti pamjaliudd \
namamsamdnd vandanti uddhattamanahdrino ||

(the last words are also read: uddhattum anagarino according to
S.), which seems to give poor or no sense at all.

18. hhdsa- (and hhassa-) = bhasman-, Pischel §§ 65. 313; but
I am not sure whether this explanation is really correct, as bhdsa-
may as well mean ’glowing embers’ and belong to blids- to shine,
glow’. — In vijjdcdranasampayd D. explains vidyah as dr any aka-
