PREFACE
to the third Edition.

The kind and indulgent reception of this man-
ual on its first appearance, renders it incumbent
on the author and publisher, to enhance the
value of this third edition, by taking proper
notice in it of the numerous and various changes
that have occurred since the second publication
of it. The author has taken careful and accurate
notice of them, and by carefully arranging and
newmodelling his materials, endeavoured to
render them truly useful. The author and pub-
lisher , therefore, flatter [themselves, that they
have acquitted themselves to the reader’s satis-
faction. Much has been curtailed in this new
edition 5 many historical illustrations, that appear-
ed interesting rather to the scholars than to
the generality of readers, have been omitted,
