The Castle. 53
Frederick II (about 1550) placed the present octagon su-
perstruction, and by means of balconies and arched windows,
brought it into communication with the new yard. After
a large bell, hung up in it, it was called: the Glocken-
thurm (Steeple). TlnfFrench attempted to blowr it. up
too, in 1689 and 1693, but in vain; the ridgelead only
was burnt, and the new roof, put on by the orders of
Charles Philipp (1719) immediately after, shared the same
fate, with the buildings of the castle in the conflagra-
tion of 1764. Thus this steeple was also reduced to a
ruinous state, the rubbish of which was removed first in
later times, when it, by a wooden staircase was made
accessible. On solemn occasions the country’s colours are
Waving on the top of it. The strong Armory, which,
Very likely, was built first after this steeple, lies beneath
it, and is extended to the entrance of the castle, from the
road that leads to it. Returning to the interior of the
castleyard, we behold with surprise the splendid building,
contiguous to the new yard, on the eastern side. Frederick II
had already formed the plan to connect his new work
With the earlier one of his brother and predecessor Lewis
V, whose rage for building he often found fault with,
by a new and magnificent building; death , however,
prevented the accomplishment of it (1556), and his ne-
phew, the elector Otto Henry, executed it in a still more
ingenious and splendid manner; hence the name Otto
Henry's Building ,or Palace, or plainly: the Knight’s-hall.
This building is founded partly on the basement of the
original foundation of the castle, partly on granit, exe-
cuted with freestone, and richly ornamented with works
of sculpture, that render it a monument of architecture
Worth seeing, especially in the front, facing the castleyard.
This palace is, upon the whole, executed in a very pure
and good style; it displays in the individual parts extreme
