The new barracks C, 6, 1 and 2. They front, from
the Rhineside, the square, and consist of two buildings
that enclose a spacious yard. These barracks are plain,
threestoried buildings, and the two wings, with the
yard , that lies between them , occupy a whole square.
The military economical building and the wood-magazine,
stand closely by, on the Rhineside.
The merchants’ hall N. 1. It stands on the Heidel-
berg side of the broad street and the palace side of the
parade It occupies a whole square, and was built under
Charles Philip in 1730. An arched colonade of stone
pillars, which support the second floor, runs round it.
It is in this arched passage, that the fair is kept, and
behind it, there is a variety of shops, The government
had once their seat in the capital side, fronting the pa-
rade: at present the grandducal aulic council have their
sessions there. A saloon for the meetings of the jury
was also fitted up here lately. The mercantile hall also
lias saloons annexed to it for the town-magistrate, the
police a. s. f. The whalebone, found here, when the
foundation of the building was dug, and which was hung
up here, has been taken to Carlsruhe. It weighs 486
pounds. The front half only of the merchants’ hall,
which is the smaller one, is the property of the publick;
the back part belongs to private individuals. The town-
clock is suspended, in the centre of the front of the
parade.
Among the rest of the remarkable buildings of the
town, we mention the townhouse, and the Roman catholic
parish church of St. Sebastian, which occupy the palace-
side of the marketplace, and are connected with each other
by a tower, 163 feet high, with a clock and gallery which
stands amidst them, in a line of 196 feet. The main-
guard is in the broad street, upwards. The late foundery
and the mint, have been translocated to Carlsruhe. The
house of correction is a massive, threestoried house,
built in 1748. The following churches remain to be
mentioned: the church of Trinity , which formerly be-
longed to the Lutherans, was founded in 1706; the late
reformed, now Concordia - church, which was rebuilt,
