I. THE office of cauzy being requisite at the cities and principal towns,
and in the pergunnahs, for the purpose of preparing and attesting deeds
of transfer and other law papers, celebrating marriages, and performing
such religious duties or ceremonies prescribed by the Mahomedan law as
have been hitherto discharged by them under the native Government;
and the nature of the above-mentioned duties renders it necessarv that
persons of character, and duiy qualified with respect to legal knowledge,
should be appointed^to these offices; and to encourage them to discharge
their trusts with diligence and fidelity, they should not be liable to removal,
unless proved to be incapable or guilty of misconduct, to the satisfaction
of the Governor-General in Council; the following rules have been accord-
ingly enacted.
II. TAhV. The cauzy-ul-cozaat, or head cauzy of Bengal, Behar, Orissa,
and Benares, shall be head cauzy of the provinces ceded by the Nawanb
Vizier to the Honourable the English East-India Company, and shall not
be removable from his office but for incapacity or misconduct in the dis-
charge of his public duty, or acts of profligacy in his private conduct,
proved to the satisfaction of the Governor-General in Council.
XccoTzt/. The head cauzy is to use a circular seal, two inches in diameter,
on which shall be inscribed the designation of his office and his name, in
the Persian language, as follows : " The seal of the cauzy-ul-cozaat of the
provinces of Bengal, Behar, Orissa, Benares, and ceded provinces. (Name
of the head cauzy.)" ^

X. The judges in the ceded provinces are to furnish the cauzi.es sta-
tioned in their respective jurisdictions with copies of the Persian and Hin-
doostanee translates of all Regulations, printed and published in the
manner directed in Regulation 1. 1803.
