have not heard of any one who attained to fame as a gilder
of such objects. If gilding had existed upon any of the marbles at
so late a period, it would scarcely have escaped the notice of
those artists and travellers, who carefully observed them in their
places; still less of those who so minutely examined and stu-
died the great number of pieces which were conveyed to Eng-
land.
