them, which is in excellent preservation, had been brought to
England in 1744, and deposited with the Society of Dilettanti, by
whom it was presented to the Royal Academy. When the great
collection of Athenian marbles became the property of the public
and were placed in the Museum, it was presented by the Aca-
demy, that it might be restored to its proper situation. The un-
clothed figure, so conspicuous upon the second of these slabs,
very much resembles in action that which was the object of so
much admiration in the preceding plate, and is a formidable rival
to it in every respect, as possessing the same ease and grace in
the action, and the same elegance of form; the chlamys in this
instance retains its proper place over the shoulder, part hanging-
down behind, part twisted round the right arm. The figures in
this slab, it will be observed, are without any covering to the legs
or feet. The action of the last horse in this plate is very beau-
tiful and well expressed; the eye, the ear, and all the muscles
of the head and mouth indicate an impatience and almost de-
termination to break into a gallop, which the efforts of the united
hands of the rider are scarcely able to restrain.
