with the ears of their horses to excite them into vivacity, and
provoke them into affected anger. It is upon this organ that an
ill-tempered and injudicious groom vents his anger, or a good-
tempered one expends his fondness, and the animal is sufficiently
intelligent to perceive the spirit in which he is treated. A finely
formed animal never appears so beautiful or so graceful as when
thus stimulated into playful gambols, by one whose uniform kind
treatment of it has taught it an habitual confidence.
