SEPULCHRAL URNS.

The sepulchral urn here represented has been much mutilated ;
it is sculptured with three figures, a warrior completely armed
with helmet and shield, holds the hand of an elderly man,
bearded, and wearing the pallium alone ; behind whom stands
a female clothed in the chiton and pallium, with her right hand
held up, as if deploring the death of the deceased. Underneath
is an inscription, which appears to have consisted of four metri-
cal lines, but of which so little remains legible that a probable
meaning cannot be obtained. See Boeckh, vol. i. p. 552. No.
1041. who has failed to elicit even a conjectural interpretation.
We here annex all that can be read with certainty, or proba-
bility.

On this solid sepulchral urn the parting scene is limited to
two figures, an elderly man clothed in the pallium, holding the
hand of a seated female clothed in a chiton and pallium. Over
her head is the name AAA. Behind the head of the man the
marble has been somewhat injured, and there his name may
have been engraved, but there is not now any legible trace of a
single letter.
