turning out Janiform aryballoi. A specimen in my collection (pi. xxi)5
unites a male with a female Dionysiac head : the one (Dionysos ?)
has a bay-wreath, the other (Ariadne ?) an ivy-wreath. Similar
vases were produced in the early decades of the fifth century6;
