FIRST PROGRESSIVE STATE.
After having made the outline according to the directions given on
sketching, it will facilitate the spreading of the tint if a clean sponge, or a
flat brush dipped in water, be passed over the paper previously; the seeming
greasiness of the paper will thereby be destroyed. For the sky take
cobalt in the brush moderately full; apply it to the upper part of
the sky, observing to keep the drawing nearly upright; continue to float the
tint from left to right, and right to left, down towards the lower part of
the sky, adding a little water to the colour ; then add a little light red,
and pass this all over the paper as evenly as possible, except any object
that should be perfectly white, white drapery, &c. ; this will give a warm
and pleasing tone to the paper. If the tint should have not been spread
