Evidence of
refinement in
objects of
common use
THE TOMB AND THE SITE
possibly a somewhat later one, is a very unpretentious stand in miniature,
only eight centimeters long. It is of common wood covered with stucco
and appears to be an article made for real use, toilet or otherwise. The
value which this clumsy little object has is derived entirely from the deco-
ration. That on top can no longer be elucidated, but those on the sides
can be, though with difficulty, and reveal not a little refinement in those
who applied delicate ornament to so simple a thing. The feet are deco-
rated with a volute (?); the sides are treated as if the stand were made of
dovetailed parts instead of in one piece. One panel is filled with fine red
and black lines in zigzags, the other, divided into three sections, shows a
flowering plant and two ducks executed very neatly in black and red
(Plate LXX, 5 and 6). For other remains see Vol. II, pp. 62, 63.
