THE TRIBUTE OF THE NORTH

verging on black.1 The African leg-ring of copper has been replaced here
by the Egyptian anklet. As to the produce, they bring gold dust or ka
stone in baskets, bags of antimony (msdm.t),2 panther skins, ostrich
eggs and feathers, a green baboon with red rump, a green monkey, and
a yellow (?) antelope (?); the latter is the only article of tribute that
is not quite regular.

THE GOLD OF SYRIA

The enforced tribute of the northern peoples has now been delivered
to the fiscal authorities, and such part of it, at least, as the king had as-
signed to the Temple of Amon, has been enregistered under the over-
sight of Puyemre. What was of most concern to the priests was the
supply of frankincense for ceremonial use, for its source was almost con-
fined to the distant shores of Punt; and, secondly, the supply of gold,
since the rings in which it was made up came nearest to forming a
currency in Egypt. With Puyemre we have taken part in the inspection
of this gum, and have heard its amount announced. It is now the turn
of the gold, or rather of that impure form (Jdm) which it is convenient
to call electrum. This scene is depicted on the lower part of the west
wall, between the middle and northern chapels (Plate XXXVI).

The figure of Puyemre facing the scene (Plate XXXV) has been
erased to make way for a standard bearing the king's name, and at a
later time has been restored in the style of that period.3 The inscription
runs "Count, etc., Puyemre looking on at the measuring of the elec-
trum (?) reckoned in true hekat measures,4 that which the Sovereign had
dedicated to his father Amon-re, lord of Nesut-tawi, for the labor on the
two great obelisks. He saith before men and gods, yes, and posterity (?)
down to the end of time (?), 'I who did this was not low in social rank;

1 Where the color has been rubbed or moistened it has become a moderate red, but this is mere
accident. Recovered pieces of uninjured color show the purple shade.

4 It is not clear whether "true" means merely "honest," a particular kind of hkt.i, or "stricken" meas-
ures as opposed to wbn "piled."
