Vorbemerkung. Die englischen Gelehrten haben sich um eine
rationelle Periodenteilung ihrer heimischen Gotik viel Mühe gegeben,
ohne indes zu Uebereinstimmung zu gelangen. Edm. Sharpe statuiert
nach dem sächsischen und anglo-normännischen noch fünf Stile:
1. transitional 1145—9°i 2- l^ncet 1190 —1245; 3. geoinetrical 1245
bis 1315; 4. curvilinear 1315 — 60; 5. rectilinear 1360—1550. Ge-
bräuchlicher ist die Teilung: 1. lancet, 2. decorated, 3. perpendicular,.
wobei als Grenze zwischen 1. und 2. das Jahr 1300, zwischen 2. und 3. das
Jahr 1370 angenommen wird. Als Einteilungsgrund gilt dabei, wie
man sieht, eine Einzelheit, die Form und Dekoration der Fenster;,
