zeit in Bild und Schrift, 1899, VII, 265).

in Dessau (Jahrbuch der k. preuss. Kunstsammlung'en, 1881. II
8-10. One illustration).

Lippmann (Friedrich), See Reproductions of drawings (L.-C.
Berlin, 1895).

6. — The « Pseudo-Grunewald » Question.

This question, intimately connected with Granach, concerns the
authorship of a certain group of pictures, atfributed by critics of about
1836-1876 to Grunewald, but by others since the latter date either to
Cranach or to an anonymous artist, nearly allied to Cranach, called pro-
visionally « The Pseudo-Griinewald ». This artist has been identified on
very slight evidence by Niedermayer (1882) and Janitschek (1890) with a
certain « Simon von Aschaffenburg ».

See Woermann (below : Kunstchronik, 29 Dec. 1898) for a complete
and lucid summary ol’ the literature on this subject published up to that
date, also g'iven (abridged) in the same writer’s Catalogue of the Cranach-
Exhibition, Dresden, 1899, pp. 12-18.

As a result. of the Exhibition it is pretty generally agreed that the
existence of a « Pseudo-Griinewald » as a distinct personality is disproved,
and that the best and earliest of the pictures in question are by Cranach
himself, while the rest are the work of more than one painter trained in
his school.

Waagen (Gustav-Lriedrich), Hanclhook of Painting (German
School), hased on Kuglers Handhook. New edition, revised hy
J.-A. Crowe. London, 1879, in-8, pp. 186-7.

Waagen here, as in other writings (see Woermann, Kunstchr.) agrees
with Ivugler, Passavant and Forster in attributing the pictures in ques-
tion to Grtinewald,
