122b. ST. JEEOME IX A CAYE. B. 113. H. 1845. R. 197.

Seconcl state.

[169 x 125.] Good. impression of the second state. The date 1512 has heen
removed. The smallest ship has lost its mast, and the block shows signs of wear
throughout. Later paper, witli heraldic watermark, of which only a fragment is
visible.

Presented by W. Mitchell, Esq., 1895.

122c. ST. JEROME IX A CAYE. B. 113. H. 1845. R. 197.

Copy.

In the original the root of a plant, which hangs from the rock over
tlie mouth of the cave, extends to the outline of the hill beyond the
water; in the copy there is an interval of mm. between the root and
the hill. The cross-stroke of the A in Diirer’s monogram is less definite
than in the original. There are other minute difFerences, tliough the copy
is careful. The date is omitted, and the copy appears to have been
made from a rather iate impression of the second state; the tablet ovei’
the crucifix, for instance, agrees with that in no. 122b.

[170 X 126.] Good impression on toned paper, witb margin [2-4], A sligbt
vertical crack may be traced across tbe rock and througb St. Jerome’s lrand and book.

Presented by W. Mitcbell, Escp, 1895.

Tbe copy, wbicb is rarer, witb or witbout text, tban tbe original, was made for a
broadside (undated) printed by Hans Glaser at Xuremberg, with Latin and German
text.beaded, “ Sanctus Hieronymus Strydonensis Tlreologus” (P. iii, p. 163). Impres-
sions of tbe complete broadside arc in tlie collection of K. Friedricli August II at
Dresden and tbe Blasius (formerly Hausmann) collection at Brunswick. Hausmann
(p. 73) mentions otber impressions of tbe copy—wliicb he wrongly describes as tbe
first block—at Berliu, Copenliagen, and in tbe Ambras collection at Vienna (K. K.
Hofmuseum).

123. THE VIRGIN WITH THE GHILD 1N SWADDLING-CLOTHES.

H. 1808. P. 177. R.—A 60.

The Yirgin sits, bending low over her Ohild, on a bank faced with
boards. Two angels, with long floating robes, hold an imperial crown
over her head. Lanclscape background, with sea ancl ship r. on the
horizon. Circle enclosed by three lines. [Diam. 93.] In the lower mar-
gin is a landscape sketch ; a stucly of broken rocky walls with leafless trees
and buildings under a hill in the clistance 1. Single bordei’-line at
the bottom, and for a distance of 26 mm. on the 1. sicle.

[Size of sbeet, 159 X 95.] Good impression, but not sbarp enougb to be very early.
Tbe block well preserved, except a portion of tbe outer line of tbe circle. No
watermark.

Prestnted by W. Mitcliell, Esq., 1895.

Tbis rare and charming woodcut is not signed, and is not described by Bartscb.
For tbese reasons, probably, critics bave besitated to ascribe it definitely to Diirer, but
it bears the marks of genuineness in every toucb. It may be of about tbe same date as
no. 122, wbicb it resembles closely in some details of tbe landscape. The Brussels
impression bas been reproduced in Hirtb’s “ Meisterholzscbnitte,” no. 47a, and tbe
present impressiou in tbe fiftb portfolio of tbe Diirer Society, 1902, no. 27. Passavant
says tbat some impressions, with tbe landscape, bave tbe woodcut of the Life of tbe
Yirgin, in thirteen compartments, by II, S. Beham (Pauli 885), printed on tbe back.
