103. CONFESSION.

A monk, with cowl over his heacl, sits r. in a chair, hearing the
confession of a layman who kneels before him. Single border.

[98 x 97.] The heading of the page (leaf lxij, recto) is “ Yon der Beycht.”

164. COMMUNION.

An altar iies obliquely across the 1. side. Before it, a priest, vested
in alb, amice, ancl crossed stole, but without a chasuble, is about to give
the Host to a man who kneels before him with foldecl hancls. Another
man ancl a woman stancl in the background.

[98 x 97.] The heading of the page (leaf lxv, verso) is “ Yom Testament Christi.”

While no. 163 is one of the worst, no. 164 is one of the best illustrations in the book,
and some of the types of face may be compared especially with no. 131 (Pauli 1197).

The composition is reversed, and the seconcl son r. wipes away his tears
with his r. hand.

In the inventory of 1837.

In the details of architecture and landscape this copy is far more faithful to the
original engraving than that described by Bartscli (viii, 235, 125) and Pauli (33d), of
wliich the block is preserved in the Derscliau collection. Pauli describes (33c)
another woodcut copy in the direction of the original, but this reversed copy is
undescribed.
