In the original, the pattern on the r. side of the man’s breeches
consists of complete discs resembling panes of glass. In the copy these
discs are indicated but not completely drawn. The heading is lost, but
the following six verses, in two columns, are preserved :
•I Ich pin genent der Rueren frey. Durch Schwedenpisz in Engellandt.
Ich han verschossen Puluer Pley. Vnd hab doch keinen herren noch.
Vnd pin passirt auss Brabant. Ich merck der krieg der hat ein loch.
[Sheet, 281 x 164.] G-ood, old impression, cut at top and bottom; uniform with
nos. 3a, 4a and 6,1 but better preserved. Watermark, a small bull’s bead witb flower
over it.

Anotber copy from tbe same design, witb Meldemann’s monogram near tbe 1. leg, is
reproduced in B.-E. (i, 21). Botb tbe headgear and tbe pattern of tbe breecbes are
different. Tbe verses, ten in number and printed in one column, witb the beading
“ Piichsenschiitz,” are partly tbe same, witb variations interpolated.
Tbis subject was also copied in reverse by Hopfer (B. 64). In Ilopfer’s copy tbe
discs are completely formed, as in tbe original.

Heroes and Tyrants of the Old Testament.
Tbis series of twelve woodcuts, not bitberto described in tbe literature on Fldtner,
appeared as illustrations of tbe original (broadside) edition of two poems by Hans
Sacbs, “ Erenport der zwelff Siegbaften Helden des alten Testaments und ander
Tyrannen. Anno Domini m.ccccc.xxxi am xxv tag Junii,” and “ Schandenpord. Die
zwdlff tbyrannen des alten testaments mit ibrem viitigcn leben. Anno Salutis
m.ccccc.xxxi am 1 tag Julii.” Tbe poems are printed in tbe folio edition of Hans
Sacbs’s poems, “ Sebr Herrliche, Schdne und Warbaffte Gedicbt,” Nuremberg, 1558, i,
49-54, and in Bibliothek des litterarischen Vereins, Stuttgart, Bd. 102, p. 211 ff. Tbe
cbaracters of tbe “ Gate of Honour” are Josbua, Gideon, Jepbtbab, Samson, Jonatban,
David, Abijab, Asa, Jebosbapbat, Amaziab, Hezekiab, Judas Maccabseus; and of tbe
“ Gate of Shame,” Pbaraob, Adonibezek, Eglon, Abimelech, Goliatb, Sau], Zerah, Aliab,
Sennacberib, Nebucbadnezzar, ITolofernes and Antiocbus. Eacb block contains two
persons. Tbe original edition of eacb poem must bave consisted of tbree sbeets, witb
two blocks, containing four persons, printed side by side at tbe top of each, tbe verses
standing below tbe woodcuts and being divided by pilasters, of wbich tbe capitals are
seen just below tbe ledge or parapet on wbicb tbe persons are leaning. Tbe design of
tbese capitals, and of the moulding in wbicb tbey are embedded, is different in tbe two
cases; tbe pseudo-Ionic capital witli an animal’s bead belongs to tbe “ Erenport.”
Ouly one fragment of sucb an original edition bas been preserved, so far as is known.
Tbe Germanic Museum at Nuremberg possesses two out of tbree sheets of the
“ Erenport.” Tbe first of tbese is reproduced as an illustration to an article by Max
Wingenroth,2 on old German stoves at Nuremberg, ci propos of a stove in tbe Burg
composed of coloured tiles partly founded on tbese woodcuts. Tbe stove in question3
affords tbe only means of identifying tbe subjects of tbe woodcuts, wben tbey occur
apart from tbe poern, since eacb tile contains tbe name and number of tbe person wbom
it represents. Unfortunately tbe tiles are not in tbeir original places, and tbe wbole
