PREFACE

Many scholars have helped me in the preparation of
this catalogue. In the early stages of the work,
while identifying the contents of these tombs and
hunting missing objects, Ruth Levy Merriam was
constantly at my side and to her keen eye are due
many identifications and many joins of fragments of
both vases and bronzes. To Donald Horton and the
late Vladimir Fewkes I am heavily indebted for help
with problems of ceramic technique; the latter has
been so kind as to examine with me many of the
vases and as a result of this cooperation the descrip-
tions of vases have gained much in accuracy. To
Robert Zahn and the authorities of the Berlin Mu-
seum I am under obligation for extraordinary privi-
leges granted me while working in the Berlin Mu-
seum; to Raniero Mengarelli and the present officials
of the Villa Giulia Museum, and to Antonio Minto
of the Museo Archeologico, Florence, I express my
thanks for unfailing courtesies. The American

Academy at Rome with its accustomed generosity
accorded me full privileges in its beautifully ar-
ranged library during the months I was in Rome.
Among the colleagues and visitors to our Museum
with whom I have discussed various aspects of this
work are the late Humfry Paine, John Franklin
Daniel, George Hanfmann, Doro Levi, Frederick
Matson, Valentine Muller, Gisela Richter, Inez
Ryburg, Rodney Young, Saul Weinberg and Robert
Zahn. The photographers of the Museum, first
William H. Witte and later Reuben Goldberg, have
laid me under obligation for their patience and
care; to Isabelle Seltzer Sweeney I am indebted for
help in preparing the index. And lastly I wish to
express my thanks to the American Philosophical
Society which has defrayed the entire expense of
the publication.
