covered with a one-handled painted tazza. Inside the
sarcophagus were found two bronze bowls and the frag-
ments of what proves to be a very interesting cande-
labrum of bronze and wood. There were also a few
other pieces of bronze, knuckle-bones, etc.

Fig. 12
If the ‘candelabrum’ can be identified as the distaff,
No. 18, then a woman was buried in the sarcophagus
and the cremated remains were those of a man, the
owner of the spear.
Pottery
1. Cinerary Bowl. PI. IX. M.S.971, H. 0.243 m.,
D. 0.284 m. Intact, but surface worn. Fabric of me-
dium fine texture, buff at the core, outer surface varying
from dark copper red to orange. Wheel-made. Me-
dium polish. Filled with burned bones apparently from
more than one body.
2. Cover for the Foregoing. PI. IX. M.S.971a,
H. 122 m., D. 0.25 m. Surface abrasions. Similar
fabric. Wheel-made. An unusual piece combining
two techniques. Its inner surface, treated with a color
wash and well polished, is of a deep copper red color,
the handle, however, the exterior of the vase and the
inside of the foot are covered with a cream slip, over
which are painted designs in red: transverse lines on
the handle; hatched triangles on the rim; below the rim
a zigzag with enclosed chevrons, broad transverse bands
connecting this zone with the foot; band about the top
of the foot, and on its flaring edge.
3. Bowl. PI. IX. M.S.972, H. 0.20 m., D. 0.248.
Intact. Wheel-made. Fabric and technique as in No. 1
but better polish. Lip neatly grooved.
4. Vase-carrier. PI. IX. M.S.970, H. 0.354 m.,
D. 0.0249 m. Mended and restored. Fabric as in the
foregoing. Base wheel-made, central bulb handmade,
flaring top probably wheel-made. Medium polish.
Clear evidence of a color wash. Large knobs on flaring

top; small knobs alternating with circular perforations on
bulb; on the base long slits connecting circular perfora-
tions and between them other circular perforations.
5. Footed Bowl. PI. IX. M.S.976, H. 0.163 m.,
D. 0.178 m. Restored. Fabric of medium fine texture
almost completely reduced. Wheel-made. Evidence of
annular construction of foot. Outer surface shows some
maroon mottling. Good polish. Offset grooved rim.
Two small string holes.
6. Cup. PI. IX. M.S.977, H. 0.085 m., D. 0.137 m.
Mended. Clumsily made on the wheel. Fabric of fine
texture completely reduced as in bucchero. The high
handle with strut is narrow at the top where its upper
outline makes four angles, and broadens toward the
shoulder. On the floor of the vase, six shallow grooves
between foot and shoulder. Small deposit of corroded
iron on exterior.
7. Cup. PI. X. M.S.974, H. 0.09 m., D. 0.093 m.
Similar fabric. Handmade. Strap handle slightly con-
vex at top; upright grooved rim; notched shoulder.
8. Footed Bowl. Pl.X. M.S.973, H. 0.091 m., D.
0.113 m. Base broken. Wheel-made. Similar fabric
reddish at core, outer surface brown streaked with red.
A red color wash was applied, but much of it was re-
moved perhaps intentionally by the strokes of the polish-
ing tool to achieve a variegated surface. Single string
hole bored after firing, perhaps at the time of burial for
attaching the following cover. On the floor of the bowl
above the foot two concentric circular grooves from which
shallow grooves radiate to the rim.
9. Cover. PI. X. M.S.975, H. 0.045 m., D. 0.113
m. Intact. Wheel-made. Similar fabric and tech-
nique. The rim has a low collar with two string holes.
It does not fit exactly to the foregoing bowl.
Objects Other than Pottery

11. Fragmentary Bronze Bowl. Pl.X. M.S.991,
D. 0.164 m. Rolled rim.
12. Bronze Cup. Pl. X. M.S.992, D. 0.10 m.
Small portion missing. Strap handle attached with two
rivets to the rim and two (now missing) to the body of
the vase. Bits of a loosely woven fabric may be seen on
the inner surface of the rim and on the upper surface of
the handle.
