ITALIC TOMB-GROUPS: NARGE (?) 27M

On the interior surface of the shoulder are short incised
parallel diagonal lines; possibly the impression of a tool
used to even the curve of the shoulder. The elaborate
white design is largely effaced but there may be traced
two zones of zigzags between horizontal bands on the
outer surface of the rim, and there are traces of similar
pattern on the inner surface. Over the rippled shoulder
are faint traces of three horizontal bands of white, and
it is probable that there were also perpendicular lines be-
tween the ripples. The handle is bordered by white
lines.
6. Similar Bowl with Grey Slip and Rippled
Shoulder. PI. XIII. M.S.837, H. 0.087 m., D. 0.23
m. Unbroken but the slip and paint are damaged.
The fabric is as in the foregoing vase, but it is covered
with a polished slip, composed of a clay which has fired
to a light drab color and which has in many places
cracked off from the underlying reddish fabric. Hand-
made. There can be no doubt that we have to do here
with a real slip. The shape is the same as the foregoing
specimens with rippled shoulders. The rim is marked
with two shallow horizontal grooves to aid in applying
the white design of which only a zigzag now remains.
On the inside of the lip, a reserved zigzag between inter-
locking white triangles; over the rippled surface of the
shoulder faint traces of other pattern, now lost; bands of
white on the handle.

7. Similar Bowl. PI. XIII and Fig. 79. M.S.848,
H. 0.098 m., D. 0.225 m. Mended. The color effect is
nearly like that of the foregoing, but there is no evidence
of a slip. The white design consists of bands on the
handle; horizontal bands and a zigzag on the inner sur-
face of the lip. The other ornament is shown in Fig. 19.
8. Similar Bowl. PI. XIII and Fig. 20. M.S.835,
H. 0.086 m., D. 0.18 m. Lip chipped. Fabric, tech-
nique and color as in No. 1. Rippled shoulder. Rim
grooved as in Nos. 4 and 6. Pigment unusually thick.
On the handle white bands; on the inside of the rim a
zigzag and bands; on the outside of the rim the design

shown in Fig. 20. On the interior base a cross and
swastikas as in Fig. 47 from Vulci 51.

9. Similar Bowl with Smooth Shoulder. PI. XIII.
M.S.832, H. 0.088 m., D. 0.245 m. Intact. Fabric and
technique as in No. 1. Only the exterior polished. The
white painted design is now almost effaced, but there may
be traced white lines on the handle, and on the lip; per-
pendicular lines on the shoulder, between horizontal
bands, which must have given much the effect of a
rippled surface; and on the floor of the vase a small
omphalos and scant remnants of design.
10. Similar Bowl. PI. XIII. M.S.847, H. 0.086
m., D. 0.199 m. Rim chipped. Only the exterior pol-
ished. Color as in the foregoing. Traces of white lines
on handles, and of vertical lines over the smooth shoulder.
On the floor of the vase cruciform ornament and swas-
tikas as in Fig. 8.
11. Bowl. PI. XIV. M.S.839, H. 0.089 m., D.0.167
m. Surface damage. Fabric of medium fine texture,
red at core, outer surface black. Handmade. Medium
polish. The rim has three horizontal grooves and two
string holes.
12. Gup. PI. XIV. M.S.738, H. 0.05 m., D. 0.122
m. Chipped. Similar fabric and technique. This
vase was catalogued as belonging to Narce 65 M, but
may be identified in the record photograph of this tomb.
13. Bowl. PI. XIV. M.S.849, H. 0.106 m., D.
0.132 m. Mended. Interior of fabric buff; outside,
orange red. Handmade. Poor polish. Evidence of
color wash.
14. Phiale. PI. XIV. M.S.838, H. 0.056 m., D.
0.129 m. Cracked. Fabric is brick red throughout.
Handmade. No polish. Two string holes. Central
