Bieber, Die Antiken Skulpturen und Bronzen des Konig.
Museum in Cassel LVII, 560; for earlier combs of bone, cf.
Montelius, PL 14,15 and 16 from Castione; and id. PI. 19,
10 and 11 from Montale. Combs were found in great
numbers in Sparta; most were of ivory, Artemis Orthia,
Pis. CXXVI-CXXXI; one was of bronze, id. PI.
LXXXV, d. A comb worn as a pendant from a neck-
lace appears on a subgeometric figurine from Boeotia,
MonPiot., I, PI. Ill (= F. Grace, Boeotian Sculpture, p. 10
and Fig. 1).
16. Cf. No. 12 from Narce 23 M, PI. XXII; No. 34
from Narce 102 F, PI. XXIII', Montelius, PI. 309, 7,
from Falerii; id. PI. 281, 25, from a well-tomb, Tar-
quinii.
17. Cf. MonAnt. V, col. 269, Fig. 67 from Tomb 63,
Novilara; RM. 1907, p. 119, Fig. 16, from the Regolini-
Galassi Tomb; MonAnt. XXXIV, cols. 323 and 326,
Fig. 6, from a chamber-tomb at Poggio della Porcarec-
cia, Populonia; Montelius, PI. 82, 6, from Bologna;
MonAnt. XXII, col. 75, Fig. 23, from Tomb 6, Cumae.
18. Cf. MonAnt. XXXV, col. 80 and PI. IX, R. i,
from the Ripostiglio del Bivio di Valpiana in the territory
of Massa Marittima.
19 and 20. Cf. No. 21 from Narce 23 M, PL XXII;
MonAnt. IV, Pl. IX, 57 and col. 361 from Falerii; id. XV,
col. 87, Fig. 38 and NS. 1905, p. 161, Fig. 25 from Rome;
id. 1924, p. 479, h, from Tomb 29 and p. 483, Fig. 33
from Tomb 30, Marino; etc.
21. Cf. Nos. 18 and 19 from Narce 24 M, PI. XVII',
MonAnt. IV, Pl. IX, 46 and col. 411, 6 and 7, from
Barnabei’s Tomb XXIV, Narce, which furnishes also
parallel for Nos. 29 and 34 from this tomb.
25. Cf. No. 25 from Narce 24 M, Pl. XVII, and the
comparanda cited under this number.
26. Cf. No. 31 from Narce 18 B, Pl. IV, and the
comparanda cited under this number.
28. Cf. No. 22 from Narce 102 F, Pl. XXIII; MonAnt.
XV, col. 179, Fig. 75d, and col. 183, Fig. 76d from Rome;
NS. 1907, p. 618, Fig. 20, from Terni, where it is asso-
ciated with a figurine of a woman, of post-geometric
date, cf. Hanfmann, p. 114, note 144.
29. With the pendant, cf. MonAnt. IV, col. 412, No.
16 from Barnabei’s Tomb XXIV, Narce; NS. 1903, p.
321, Fig. 38 from Tomb 35, Caracupa; MonAnt. XVI,
col. 396, Fig. 21, from Tomb LX, a chamber-tomb, in
the Ager Capenatus. The bird and axe combination
may well derive from the East, cf. Schmidt, Tepe Hissar,
PL XLVIII, H. 4279.
29-35. This type of fibula seems to be an Italic in-
vention; when it occurs outside of Italy as at Sparta,
Artemis Orthia, p. 198 and Pl. LXXXII, a,b,e,f,i, and k,

it should probably be regarded as an import from Italy.
Fibulae of bronze such as Nos. 14-16 from Narce 18 B,
Pl. IV, Figs. 3 and 4, must derive from this type. Similar
thin disks of bone between those of amber occur in
Barnabei’s Tomb XXIV, MonAnt. IV, PL IX, 46 and
cols. 383, 384, and 412, No. 7, and in his Tomb XXV,
id. PL X, 16 and 18 and cols. 419 and 384, etc.
36 and 37. Cf. No. 24 from Narce 4 F, Pl. XII and
Fig. 17; No. 50 from Narce 7 F, Pl. XXXVII.
39 and 40. Cf. Montelius, PL 195, 16, from the first
Circolo delle Pelliccie, Vetulonia; id. Pl. 307, 2, from
Montarano; PL 318, 2 and 3 from Barnabei’s Tomb
XXXII, Narce; PL 349, 5 from Veii. Cf. also StEtr.
XII, Pl. LIX, 64 and 65 and p. 301. In the Metro-
politan Museum are two fibulae with similar glass beads
and flanking pieces of gold, ornamented with diagonals.
Richter, Etruscan Handbook, Fig. 15.
43. Cf. Montelius, PL 286, 8 from the Warrior’s
Tomb, Tarquinii; id. 181, 2 from the Circolo di Bes,
Vetulonia; Minto, Marsiliana, PL 23, No. 5 from Grave
32; etc.
44-49. Cf. 45-50 from Narce 23 M, Pl. XXI; No. 39
from Narce 7 F, Pl. XXXVII; MonAnt. IV, PL IX, 20 and
col. 440, No. 10, from Barnabei’s Tomb XXXII, Narce;
id. XXXI, col. 268 and Fig. 189 from a chamber-tomb
at Ianchina, Locri; Montelius, Pl. 182, 4, from the Cir-
colo dei Monili, Vetulonia.
53. Cf. No. 38 from Narce 23 M, Pl. XXII; StEtr.
XII, Pl. LIX, 61a and 61c from the Ripostigli stranieri,
Vetulonia; CLR. VI and VII, p. 70, Fig. 74 and p. 326,
Fig. 70.

Fabric of medium fine texture, brick red throughout,
covered, except for upper surface of the rim, with a cream
slip. Handmade, with wheel-made rim. Designs in
red: zones of geometric patterns, hatched triangles and
pairs of parallel chevrons joined by cross lines and en-
closing crossed diagonals on the neck; hour-glass orna-
ments with their long axes alternately horizontal and
vertical, and groups of waved and perpendicular lines
on the shoulder. The zone below the hour-glass pat-
terns is divided by groups of perpendicular lines into
metopes, filled with crossed diagonal rows of dots. Be-
low the handles is a row of small parallel chevrons, their
apices to the right. In the lowest zone of ornament,
metopes between groups of upright lines are filled with
