CATALOGUE AND COMPARANDA OF THE
TOMB-GROUPS FROM VULCI

VULCI 25
Frothingham’s note on this tomb states merely that it was
a well-tomb excavated at Vulci by Mancinelli. It, with
the two well-tombs which follow, was probably opened
on the property of Prince Torlonia, since an itemized bill
of Frothingham’s purchases includes the contents of three
well-tombs excavated on the Torlonia estates.
Pottery
1. Cinerary Urn. PL XLIII. M.S.602, H. 0.367
m., D. 0.223 m. Restored. A scar opposite the sur-
viving handle implies a second handle and the even out-
line of the scar suggests that it was purposely broken.
Fabric of medium fine texture, reddish brown at the core,
black on the outer surface. Handmade. Inferior
polish.
2. Lid of the Above. PI. XLIII. M.S.602, D.
0.052 m. Mended. Similar fabric, red at core, outer
surface red with black mottlings. Handmade. Medium
polish of upper surface.
3. Urn. PI. XLIII. M.S.588, H. 0.373 m., D.
0.252 m. Original surface mostly gone. Both handles
missing. Similar fabric and technique. Handmade.
In the wide rim are two perforations opposite one another
for attaching the lid.
4. Lid of the Foregoing. PI. XLIII. M.S.588, D.
0.203 m. Intact. Fabric as in the foregoing, but un-
polished. Handmade. Surmounted by a large hollow
clay ball with a central perforation in the top. Two
small opposite perforations in the rim matching those
of the foregoing urn.
5. Bowl. PI. XLIII. M.S.595, H. 0.172 m., D.
0.212 m. Foot modern and probably too high. Fabric
of fine texture, black at core, outer surface red with clear
evidence of a color wash. Handmade. Good polish of
exterior surface.
6. Bowl. PI. XLIII. M.S.591, H. 156 m., D. 0.28
m. Intact. Similar fabric and technique. Both ex-
terior and interior surfaces well polished to a point just
below the deep grooved rim.
7. Bowl with Upright Handle. PI. XLIII. M.S.
592, H. 0.075 m., D. 0.20 m. Abrasions and small
restorations. Fabric of medium fine texture, maroon at
core, outer surface maroon to black. Handmade.
Good polish. Handle ribbed on inner face. Sloping

grooved rim with transverse ledges on either side of single
handle. Notches on these ledges and on the shoulder
between ledges and handle.
8. Similar Bowl. PI. XLIII. M.S.598, H. 0.09 m.,
D. 0.216 m. Intact. Fabric of medium fine texture,
red at core, outer surface black to dark brown. Hand-
made. Outside well polished. Decoration as in the
foregoing except that the flutings on the handle are finer
and the notches, also finer, are on the middle ridge of
the rim.
9. SimilarBowl. PI.XLIII. M.S.594,H.0.063m.,
D. 0.164 m. Mended. Surface badly worn. Similar
fabric, red at core, outer surface brown with red mot-

Similar fabric, almost completely reduced. Handmade.
Clumsy handle, flanked by knobs.
11. Similar Bowl. Pl. XLIII. M.S.600, H. 0.38
m., D. 0.091 m. Intact. Similar fabric and technique.
Good polish.
12. Similar Bowl. Pl. XLIII. M.S.698, H. 0.31
m., D. 0.064 m. This vase was catalogued with ‘miscel-
laneous objects’ but may be identified in the record
photograph of this tomb. Intact. Fabric of medium
fine texture, red at core, outer surface brown to black.
Handmade. Clumsy workmanship.
13. Cup. Pl. XLIII. M.S.597, H. 0.04 m., D. 0.105
m. Surface damage. Foot missing. Similar fabric

fine texture, almost completely reduced. Handmade.
Good polish. Shoulder fluted. At base of rim an
extraordinarily fine line of rope pattern; three double
lines of the same on handle, terminating at either end in
impressed dotted circles. Faint traces of a pattern of
white pigment (tongues?) below the rim on the outside.
