ornamented the tops of the upright ledges on either side
of handle. Two horizontal grooves containing traces of
white on neck. Below rim on interior, traces of solid
white triangles, like those on No. 15.
9. Cup. Pl. XLIX. M.S.649, H. 0.041 m., D.
0.093 m. Catalogued with the contents of Vulci 51 but
clearly identified in the record photograph of this tomb.
Intact. Fabric completely reduced as in bucchero.
Handmade. Excellent polish. High handle, constricted
at rim. At junction of rim and handle fine horizontal
bands of impressed rope pattern, flanked by pendant
hatched triangles of the same. The upper part of the
handle is edged with rope pattern, which half way from
the top, on the outer face of the handle, is stopped by
seven horizontal bands of the same pattern. The ridge
at base of neck is notched for a short distance on either
side of the handle.
10. Cup. PL XLIX. M.S.681, H. 0.042 m., D.
0.087 m. Handle missing. Fabric of medium fine
texture, grey to brown throughout. Handmade. In-
ferior polish. Very small knob opposite handle. On
the interior surface may be seen a small inclusion of red
ochre.
11. Cup. Pl. XLIX. M.S.589, H. 0.052 m., D.
0.105 m. Transferred from Tomb 25, Vulci, on the
evidence of the record photograph. Intact. Similar
fabric and technique. Handmade. High polish. Next
to the rim the handle is rounded and notched; next to
the shoulder it is triangular in shape and bordered with
impressed rope pattern. The same pattern at base of
rim. Rippled shoulder. On the neck below the rim
an even line of thin white, and below this, faint traces
of pattern.
12. Cup. Pl. XLIX. M.S.668, H. 0.05 m., D. 0.084
m. Handle missing, and other breaks. Fabric of
medium fine texture, maroon at core, outer surfaces
black. Handmade. High polish. Fluted shoulder.
Small omphalos on the floor.
13. Cup. Pl. XLIX. M.S.673, H. 0.026 m., D. 0.10
m. Surface badly damaged. Similar fabric red at core,
outer surfaces brown to red. Handmade. Horizontal
handle flanked by vertical ledges. Lower part of vase
fluted. Traces of white pattern on inner surface of rim.

14. Fragmentary Cup. Pl. XLIX. M.S.672, H.
0.037, D. 0.109. Over half is preserved. Similar
fabric maroon at core, outer surfaces black. Handmade.
High polish. Shoulder fluted. The scars on the base
indicate a foot.
15. Cup. PL XLIX. M.S.671, H. 0.061 m., D. 0.11
m. Handle broken. Similar fabric and technique.
Good polish. Shape as in No. 13 except that this
specimen is set on a low foot. Two knobs on either side
of the handle which is ornamented with transverse bands
of thick white pigment. On the exterior of the rim, a row
of solid triangles of the same pigment, their bases at the
top. Faint traces of white pattern on interior of rim.

Handles. Pl. XLIX. M.S.674, H. 0.059 m., D. 0.144
m.; M.S.675, H. 0.063 m., D. 0.157 m.; M.S.676, H.
0.065 m., D. 0.16 m. Surface damage to M.S.675.
Fabric of very fine texture, pinkish buff throughout.
Wheel-made.
19. Bowl of Similar Shape. Pl. XLIX. M.S.682,
H. 0.054 m., D. 118 m. One handle missing; surface
damage. Fabric of medium fine texture, dark red
throughout. Handmade. Both interior and exterior of
the vase covered with a creamy white slip on which the
design is painted in red: a broad band below the rim; a
zigzag on the shoulder; a broad band below the shoulder,
another above the foot, the two connected by four chev-
rons, their apices down; on the base a cross.
20. Similar Bowl. Pl. XLIX. M.S.670, H. 0.058
m., D. 0.11 m. Extensive damage to surface. Fabric
and technique as in the foregoing.
21. Plate. PL XLIX. M.S.677, H. 0.041, D. 0.212
m. Intact. Fabric of fine texture, pale buff through-
out. Wheel-made; warped in firing. Concave surface
unpainted but grooved near the edge. Two lug handles,
one with two string holes. The design on the convex
surface consists of bands of varying width about the base
and rim between which are groups of six parallel
transverse lines alternating with groups of six chevrons.
22. Bowl with Offset Rim. Pl. XLIX. M.S.680,
H. 0.087 m., D. 0.134 m. Rimehipped. Fabric of fine
texture, ruddy buff at core, outer surfaces buff. Wheel-
