corinthian pyxis. Sometimes a shape used earlier
in Italy was transformed under foreign influence;
thus to the cup No. 6 from Narce 70 M, PI. V, the
body of which conforms to the type of bowl used to
cover cinerary urns, was added under Greek in-
fluence a fenestrated foot, and to the cup, with
horned handles, No. 5 from Narce 43, PL 7, was
added an offset rim. The introduction of the pot-
ter’s wheel doubtless had a part in these and other
changes such as grooved rims, upright or horizontal.
Metal-work must also have been revolutionized
during this period under foreign influence. Writing
was certainly in use by the middle of the seventh
century.
On the map have been indicated the places
where comparanda for the objects from our tombs
have been found. They are so numerous and so
widely distributed as to suggest that foreign in-
fluence penetrated deeply into Central Italy dur-
ing this period.
