rous protection to those branches of knowledge, which refine
life, exalt the mind, and upon which materially depend the
prosperity and happiness of a people. May such a testimony
grace the reign of our Sovereign, commenced under such
propitious auspices, and to whom no greater happiness can
be desired, than the realization of those anticipations, with
which an enthusiastic people have accompanied her accession
to the throne of this great empire.
Postscript. The limits of a paper like the present
necessarily precluded me from alluding otherwise than in
general terms to the claims of Art and Literature. But
the same grounds, upon which the merits of Science are to
be advocated, may be urged with equal effect on their
behalf; and consequently the repetition of the arguments,
as applied to them, is rendered unnecessary.
