Another very important source is a file of over 300 letters and cards sent to what
was then a German support group for Humanitas International. These letters,
often requesting Information about that support group, were for the most part
the result of Baez having announced the address of the group at several of her
concerts in the summer of 1981. These personal documents present proof of the
fact that Baez has indeed motivated a number of young people to become
"active" and socially engaged. Other sources used are interviews conducted with
various singer-songwriters, notes on participant Observation, and about 100
published concert reviews. Added to these are the sources I have been using
throughout, especially Wasserman's manuscript from the mid seventies and the
interviews with Baez that I have done.
II The Concert as Classroom?
A. TheSetting
The setting for the concert can be a concert hall or a Stadium or other area
fitted out to accomodate large numbers of people. In recent years in West
Germany, Baez has given a number of open-air concerts, either alone or with
other artists (e.g. Bettina Wegner and Konstantin Wecker). The numbers of
people attending a Baez concert ränge between 5,000 and 20,000. In two
solo open-air concerts in Würzburg the attendance was 10,000 and 12,000 (for
1978 and J980 respectively). Free concerts increase the numbers. For the
famous Washington Monument grounds concert an estimation of 30,000 or more
is not extravagant. The July 15,1983 free concert for nonviolence at the Place de
la Concorde (according to the televised introduction of a film of that event) was
attended by more than 100,000 people. Demonstrations increase the size of the
crowd even more. Düring Peace Week in the United States (starting on the 6th
of June, 1982) Baez performed in Pasadena with Bob Dylan at a benefit before
85,000 and later on June 12th sang and spoke before ca. 3/4 of a million people
who had gathered in Central Park and its surroundings in New York City. These
numbers make it very clear that we are not dealing with the classroom in terms
of size or numbers. The average concert is attended by ca. 10,000 young people,
some of whom have traveled over a hundred or more kilometers to attend.
1. Indoor vs Outdoor Concerts
Baez has commented on the differences between singing inside and outside.
At the Ulm rock festival she told me such a concert was a challenge for her and
