(Not by Diirer.) Portrait of Joachim
Patinir, after a
Portrait
DRAWN IN 1521 BY DuRER. B. 108.
Probably engraved by Cornells Cort. A complete impression should have
a margin at the foot, but no engraved inscription. See Burlington Magazine,
1926, XLIX, 136, and C.D., p. 142.
449. (XotbyDiirer.) The Crucifixion in Outline. (Firstplate.) P.109. C.D. 107.
This plate, though it closely resembles in technique the unfinished portions
(in outline) of a few extant trial proofs of Dilrer’s engravings is, no doubt,
a compilation by a later hand (second half of 16th century) from a number
of drawings by Diirer of the years 1521-25, most of which are extant
and can be identified. These drawings appear to have been made with
a view to a picture of the Crucifixion which was not carried out.
The first plate, which is rare, is much superior in quality to the second,
though the differences are small and difficult to describe. There is a
dot in the middle of the incomplete double circle (representing a clock ?)
on the church tower. There is no monogram.
