Lippmann places it, apparently, about 1509-10; Conway (no. 216)
dates it 1502, which appears to me much more probable. Binder, on
other hand, arguing from the probable date of the picture itself, would
place the drawing about 1518, and thinks that it is not necessarily from
the hand of Durer, an opinion which I find it impossible to share.

Christ in the Winepress.
Oil painting on panel by an unknown artist, after the sketch by Durer, in the Chapel
of St. George in the Church of St. Gumbertus, at Ansbach. 171 by 120 cm.,
672 by 47i in. Reproduced by permission of Dr. F. Stoedtner, Berlin, from his
copyright photograph.
Literature : M. J. Binder, " Das Ansbacher Kelterbild " (" Blotter far
Gemaldekunde," Vienna, October, 1906, III., Heft 4, p. 61). In this latest
article on the subject the older literature is quoted as follows: Waagen,
"Gesch. d. Malerei," I., 194; Lotz, “ Kunsttopographie Deutschlands";
Janitschek, “ Gesch. d. deutschen Malerei," p. 400, Anm. ; Zahn's “ Jahr-
bucher," I., 21, 183, 361, II., 181; F. v. Reber, "Gesch. d. Malerei," 249;
Terey, “ H. Baldung GrUn "1 ; Wernigke, " Zeitschr. f. Christliche Kunst " ;
Koelitz, " Hans von Kulmbach," pp. 30, 43, 70. J. Meyer, " Ansbachs
SehenswUrdigkeiten," 1890, p. 24, may be added.
The picture reproduces the composition as fixed by Durer rather
closely, save that the whole group is reversed, with the exception of
the First Person of the Trinity, Who is still on the left. In details, for
instance in the arrangement of the group of angels and the attitude ot
St. Peter, there is considerable divergence. The number of scrolls has
been increased. That at the top now contains the quotation from the
Lamentations of Jeremiah, which was intended from the first to appear
as a key to the motive of the picture. It reads: "Torcular calcavit
dominus virgini filie iuda trenorum I° C." Beneath this, over the
head of Christ, is the quotation: "Torcular calcavi solus et de gentibus
non est vir mecum ysaie lxiii C." Over the head of the Almighty is
another quotation from Isaiah (liii. 8) : " Propter scelus populi mei
percussi eum isaie liii C." The Virgin says: " Quare o fili rubrum est
indumentum tuum (Isaiah lxiii. 2: the words " O fili" interpolated).
The other quotation originally noted by Durer (Rev. v. 9) is put into
the mouth of the canon : " Redemisti nos deus in sanguine tuo Apo. v.
miserere mei." St. Peter lays his hand on a scroll with the words:
" Hic vite ostium posuit unde sacramenta emanant," a quotation from

author, Bd. II., Strassburg, 1900, the attribution is withdrawn.
