of the Ma/s Gn;?, upon the eaR angle of the city, is mounted
with long pieces of ordinance, one of which hath seven cylin-
ders, each of them three inches in diameter. Half a furlong
to the W. S. W. os the,harbour, is the battery of N/Yzt-r's
or ;/z? Gz?;<? c/* ;/zc which considing of a double
row of cannon, commands the entrance into the port, and
the road before it.
The port is of an oblong figure, a hundred and thirty
fathom long, and eighty broad. The eastern mound of it,
which was formerly;/'? is wellsecured by ieveral Rrong
fortisications. The Rw;z^ Crz/?/?, (built by the iS/M7zz;m;A
whilR they were maRers of ;A? J/*/zz;zzs ) and the two remote
batteries, (ereAed within this century) are (aid to be /wv/'-
yrac/y and have each os them their lower embrasures mounted
with thirty six pounders. But the middle battery, which
appears to be the oldeR, is of the leaR desence. As none of
the fortisications are aisiRed with either mines or advanced
works; andasthesoldiers, who are to guard and desend them,
cannot be kept up to any regular courses os duty and atten-
dance, a few relolute battalions, prote&ed by a linall squadron
of ihips, would have no great difficulty to make themselves
quickly matters of the very RrongeR.
The hills and valleys round about are every where
beautified with gardens and country seats, whither the inha-
bitants of better fashion retire, during the summer season.
The country seats are little white honses, shaded by a variety
of sruit trees and evergreens ; whereby they afford a gay and
delightful prospect towards the sea. The gardens are well
slocked with melons, Ruits and pot herbs os ail kinds ; and
what is chiefly regarded in thesehot climates, each of them
enjoys as well as the city a great command os excellent water,
Rom many rivulets and fountains.
The government of , which difseres little
from that of TirzzzA, consisls of the Dzy, and a common council,

and the whole soldiery sometimes, are called upon to aisisi.
All affairs of moments ought to be agreed upon by this assembly,
before they pass into laws. But for some years there has been
little account made of this body; andthey have been convened
only to content to measures before concerted in the cabinet

even the moR inferiour, having an equal right and title to
