GREEK AND ETRUSCAN VASES

471. 76.33 (52). Oinochoe. H. 0.145 m.; with handle 0.192 m.; D. 0.138 m.
Gift of Thomas G. Appleton, 1876.
Clay pale dull yellow, firm even texture; clay of cover warmer in tone. Body
nearly hemispherical, bottom flat, short neck, trefoil mouth, wide flat handle.
Decoration in lustrous black glaze with applied red and white; at top of body,
incised radial bars, pairs alternately white, red, and black; above and below
the main zone, black bands with applied red lines; in the frieze, a grazing goat,
a human-headed bird with extended wings between two panthers, and a swan
with extended wings, in the field incised rosettes and spots; at the bottom, a
narrow band of fine rays.

Clay pale buff. Body nearly hemispherical with large flat bottom, small
neck with plastic ring, trefoil mouth, wide strap handle. Decoration in slightly
lustrous black glaze with applied red and white; vase covered with black glaze,
except for a reserved band at the bottom, on which are short black to yellow
rays pointing up; red line flanked by white lines just above this band; on the
shoulder, a tongue pattern marked by double incised radial lines, alternate bars
left black, intervening bars alternately red and white, a narrow horizontal red
line flanked by white lines just below the tongue pattern.

Clay dull yellow. Body ovoid, contracting to a small spreading foot; short
neck, erect lip, small handles. Decoration in dull brown varying to black; on
the shoulder, tongue pattern; on the body, horizontal lines above and below a
frieze of reversing lotus flowers, details incised; on the neck, a zigzag.

Clay pale dull buff. Body ovoid; spreading foot, small neck, vertical lip,
small loop handles. Decoration in dark brown to black glaze, somewhat lus-
trous, and applied red: on the shoulder, two panthers; in main zone below five
horizontal lines, two panthers and three water-birds; in the field: spots, incised
rosettes and irregular incised spots; below main zone, horizontal lines above fine
rays; foot black, zigzag on neck, lines on lip and on back of handles.

Clay pale dull red, containing occasional bits of chalk. Deep bowl with
slightly convex thin sides and narrow foot, two loop handles near the edge.
