ORIENTALIZING WARES OF GREEK MAINLAND

bands; on the edge, on the handles, and at the top outside, groups of short bars;
outside in the main zone, four spiral and palmette ornaments pointing down,
separated by vertical bands, black bands with rows of small attached spirals
flanked by bands of diagonal lines, a broken meander flanked by similar bands,
and rows of chevrons flanked by chequer-board pattern; above the panels, a
red line and a black band; below them and on the base, red and black lines and
bands; short vertical lines on the edge of the foot.

534. 24.7. Covered bowl. H. 0.105 m., with cover 0.165 m.; D. 0.217 m.
Acquired in Smyrna (?). Rodocanachi Fund; purchased, 1924.
Clay pale dull red, with occasional bits of chalk; pale buff slip outside, but
on the bowl the slip is now a dull orange brown; decoration in slightly lustrous
black glaze, burned to an orange red on most of the cover, and applied dull red.
Bowl with vertical sides above straight sloping lines of the bottom, low base
ring, two horizontal loop handles; cover with large flat knob in the centre. On
each side of the bowl between the handles a pair of flying birds facing each other,
a red spot on the body, the wings and tail with linear decoration; between them
a vertical band of linear decoration (reversing chevrons) and linear ornaments
including a spiral in the field; bars on the handles, a running loop pattern over
the handles, and bars on the upper edge; broad bands of thin glaze on the slop-
ing sides, and on the inside of the bowl. On the cover an elaborate pattern of
palmettes and spirals with linear ornaments in the field, and short rays from
the knob; on the knob a rosette.
Inside the cover a potter’s mark is incised in the clay. Cf. Hackl,

535. 01.8055. Plastic handle (panther). H. 0.086 m.; L. 0.107 m.
“From Thebes, without doubt.” Purchased from Pierce Fund, 1901.
Clay violet-red, slightly granular with occasional white and black particles.
Nearly rectangular projecting handle from a large vase (column krater?) with
holes for fastening; on the flat handle, a panther lying down, head erect
and facing out. Decoration in lustrous black glaze with traces of applied red;
handle solid black; body of panther covered with small circles, except for dots
on the face; eyes modelled and painted, mouth painted black, chevrons on
end of tail.
