Saturday, March 17th.—"We left Constantinople this morn-
ing at seven o'clock, but were detained at Ooscooda, tbe
opposite town on tbe Asiatic side, waiting for borses, until
ten.

Tbese Turks are luxurious fellows; tbe post-master left
word tbat be bad waited for us until past eigbt, and was tben
at bis batb; and as be had to sign my post firman, I was
obliged to wait patiently till be bad completed bis toilet. A
governor is never to be seen until after eleven in tbe morning,
being in bis barem, wbicb, witb bis batb and mosque, occupy
mucb of bis day.

For some miles on tbe way, after leaving Ooscooda, on
eitber side of tbe road were burial-grounds, wbose groves of
cypress-trees give a striking feature to bills otherwise unin-
teresting ; but tbe view from them of the city, and its splen-
did situation, will always reward the traveller who may visit
them. The whole line of our journey skirted the eastern
shores of the Sea of Marmora, and passed the series of
