FRENCII ARCHITECTURE,

having eiglit domes from the entrance to the eastern termination,
which is sqnare and without side aisles. This huilding altogether
must present peculiarities well worthy of study, hut regarding these
it is dangerous to speak without more infonnation than is now
attainahle.
516. Fortified Church at Royat. Frorn Gailhabaud.
Among the exceptional churches of this district, one of the most
interesting is that of Eoyat, illustrated in woodcut No. 516, heing a
specimen of a fortified church, such as are sometimes, tliough not fre-
quently, found in France. That at Maguelonne, quoted ahove (p. 606),
is another, and there are several others in the South of France; hut
none prohahly either so complete or showing so many castellated
features as this. In its rained state we lose the westem, or possihly
the central tower, which might have somewhat restored its ecclesiastical
character; hut even as it is, it is a singularly picturesque and ex-
pressive huilding, thouglr it speaks more of war ancl hloodshed than
of peace and gooclwill to all men.
